This digital project explores the design and
conceptualization of a next-generation diagnostic
biosensor aimed at revolutionizing how health conditions
are detected and monitored.
15-23% of diagnoses are inaccurate, delayed, or
wrong, including over 12 million Americans misdiagnosed
in primary care and 7.4 million in emergency sectors.
Doctors performing standard testing often miss the
real problem, delaying treatment and leaving patients
without answers. Despite the severity of this issue,
no single device exists that is able to detect a wide
range of health inconsistencies that doctors may
overlook.
A small round, self-adhering, partially embedded biosensor
that continuously monitors blood workups, neural activity,
and lifestyle factors, identifying both existing and
potential health risks. The companion app translates
complex biological data collected by the wearable
device, into clear actionable insights, empowering users
to understand their bodies.
Diagnostic uncertainty and misdiagnosis remain significant global heath challenges. This results in patients suffering for years, emotional and financial distress, depression, anxiety, shame, self doubt, and more significantly suicide and death. In a South African study based in the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Health Sciences comparing clinical diagnoses to post-mortem findings, out of 288 cases 39.3% had major discrepancies and 21.5% had minor discrepancies.
Broader analyses account 1 in 20 adults experience diagnostic error annually. Concerning primary care visits, 15-30% involve Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUPS) where patients present with fatigue, pain or dizziness yet standard test reveal no clear cause. Another prominent issue is patients being misdiagnosed with a psychosomatic label. A study of over 3000 people with autoimmune disease revealed over 70% experienced psychosomatic or mental misdiagnoses.
Current research highlights a critical gap in global healthcare, involving doctor biases, lack of knowledge, delay in analysis, and lack of all relevant information from patients. Current health tech monitoring devices such as glucose and blood pressure monitors are limited to singular separate devices and are uncomfortable to wear, and wrist watch monitoring devices can be inaccurate. Preferably a device that accurately monitors a wider variety of medical issues as well as living factors on a daily basis could help minimize this problem.
